Methodology

Process.One system, not three vendors.

Every Burkett & Associates engagement runs on the same four-phase engine — Diagnose, Design, Deploy, Measure. The phases replace the stitched-together vendor work most clients bring to a senior firm: one strategic partner rather than three separate retainers, each handing the brief off halfway through.

Public relations, communications, and brand strategy are not three services that happen to share a client — they are one practice. The four-phase engine exists to honor that, moving the work from the first audit memo through the final quarterly reputation report with the same senior team in the room the entire way.

Why one system

The work moves together. Or it does not move.

The four-phase engine is the operating shape of a Burkett & Associates engagement. The phases are sequential, but the practices that move through them — PR, communications, and brand strategy — move on the same cadence, with the same senior practitioners in the room from the first audit memo through the final quarterly reputation report.

That is the difference between an integrated engagement and the stitched-together vendor work most clients arrive with. A PR firm hands off after the placements. A communications shop hands off after the announcement. A brand consultancy hands off after the deck. The four-phase engine exists so none of those handoffs happen — strategy sets the narrative, communications speaks it, PR earns the room, and measure proves the engagement moved the metrics it was designed to move.

In one line

One engagement, sequenced end to end, measured end to end.

Phase 01

Diagnose.

An honest reading of where the brand sits before any strategy is written. Audits, stakeholder mapping, and a baseline reputation read establish the facts the rest of the engagement moves against.

What happens

The first weeks of an engagement are spent listening. The senior team runs an audit memo tied to the client’s actual market position, maps the stakeholders who matter most, and establishes a baseline read against share of voice and message adoption. Nothing in the engagement is drafted in this phase — Diagnose exists so Design starts from evidence, not assumption.

Sample deliverables

01.01

Audit memo

A written reading of where the brand actually sits in its market — strengths, gaps, and the gaps between stated positioning and received perception.

01.02

Stakeholder map

The reporters, editors, partners, investors, and internal voices who matter most for this engagement, ranked by reach, relevance, and openness to a relationship.

01.03

Baseline reputation read

A starting measurement of share of voice, message adoption, and editorial standing against the competitive set the engagement is designed to move.

Phase 02

Design.

The narrative architecture that frames every downstream deliverable. Positioning, messaging, and content pillars are drafted by the senior team, not by junior associates.

What happens

Design is where the strategy takes shape as language. The senior team drafts the positioning narrative that grounds every outreach, builds the messaging architecture that holds up across audiences, and sets the content pillars that publish through the rest of the engagement. Every asset that ships later in the engagement pulls from this body of work — the architecture is the thing that keeps PR, communications, and brand moving as one.

Sample deliverables

02.01

Positioning narrative

A written narrative that names who the brand is for, what it stands for, and why it exists in the form it does — drafted by the senior team, signed off before any outreach.

02.02

Messaging architecture

A tiered message system — pillar, supporting, and proof — that translates the positioning into language every audience can hear without losing the through-line.

02.03

Content pillars

The recurring editorial themes the engagement will publish against, each tied to a stakeholder group, an outlet set, and the metric the work is scoped to move.

Phase 03

Deploy.

The integrated push that turns positioning into coverage, voice, and visibility. Press, communications, and brand all move together through the same senior team.

What happens

Deploy is where the work meets the room it was written for. The senior team runs the press push, ships the launch communications, and places the executives who carry the messaging into the right editorial conversations. The integrated shape means PR, communications, and brand move on the same cadence rather than three separate announcements — the strategy that showed up in the narrative carries through every placement.

Sample deliverables

03.01

Press push

Senior-led earned-media outreach against the target outlet map, anchored to the messaging architecture and weighted by placement quality over volume.

03.02

Launch communications

Coordinated internal and external messaging built around the moment the engagement is scoped to move — fundraises, rebrands, executive changes, releases.

03.03

Executive placement

Editorial and speaking opportunities for the principals who carry the brand, prepped, pitched, and followed through by the same seniors who wrote the messaging.

Phase 04

Measure.

The reporting that proves the engagement moved the metrics it was scoped to move. Quarterly reviews tied to brand lift, share of voice, and message adoption — not vanity mentions.

What happens

Measure is the discipline that keeps the whole engine honest. The senior team ships a quarterly reputation report against the metrics the work was scoped to move, runs a share-of-voice review against the client’s actual competitive set, and surveys for message adoption among the audiences the engagement was built to reach. Vanity mentions are tracked but never reported as the headline number — the headline is the brand lift, the share of voice, and the growth the work is designed to support.

Sample deliverables

04.01

Quarterly reputation report

A written, quarterly read against the metrics the engagement was scoped to move — coverage quality, share of voice, message adoption, and brand lift.

04.02

Share-of-voice review

A measured standing against the competitive set the client actually competes with, reported against editorial weight, not just mention count.

04.03

Message adoption survey

A periodic read on whether the audiences the engagement targets actually carry the positioning, weighted against the brand lift the work is designed to produce.

Senior-led delivery

The same partner end to end.

Every phase of the engine is staffed by senior practitioners. The partner who scopes an engagement is the one drafting the positioning, running the press push, and signing off on the quarterly reputation report — the through-line Burkett & Associates was built on, and the shape of every retainer the firm runs.

One system. Sequenced end to end. Accountable end to end.
